About The PADI Assistant Instructor Course
This course is typically run over 4-5 days, and after the course, an Assistant Instructor can assist Instructors more thoroughly on courses and can teach the PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy specialty course and PADI AWARE Speciality course independently.
You need to be certified as an Assistant Instructor before becoming a PADI Instructor, and that it’s included when you do the PADI IDC. Not many people realize that you can actually do the PADI AI course on its own, and you may have some very good reasons for this such as not having enough time, wanting to get more teaching practice, need a refresh as your Divemaster course was done years ago, want to find out if it’s really the right career choice for you etc.
Taking your PADI Assistant Instructor course as a stand-alone course is a great way of finding out if being an Instructor is really what you want to do.

Step 2 - With Your Instructor
You will compelte the PADI Standards and Procedures workshops for courses you can teach with in water training, learning, instruction, the PADI System, Risk Management and Diver Safety, The Business of Diving and your role as an instructor, Marketing Diving and Sales Counseling workshops.
- Prerequisites: PADI Divemaster* completion of Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care training* within 24 months; min 60 logged dives; medically cleared for diving by a physician within 12 months. (* or qualifying training)
- Total time commitment: 4-5 Days
- Minimum age: 18

PADI Assistant Instructor Course Prerequisites
To qualify for training on the PADI Assistant Instructor Development Course, you must:
- Be certified as a PADI Divemaster or be an Divemaster in good standing with another training organisation for at least six months.
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be certified as a diver for at least six months
- Have 60 logged dives that include experience in night, deep and navigation diving.
- Have proof of CPR and First Aid training within the last 24 months. The Emergency First Response course meets this requirement
- Be fit for diving and submit a Medical Statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months or full HSE Medical.
Course Medical Requirements
Scuba diving requires a minimum level of health and fitness. Chronic health conditions, certain medications and/or recent surgery may require you to get written approval from a physician before diving.
Avoid disappointment, download and review the Diver Medical form to ensure you won’t need a physician’s approval to dive before enrolling in a scuba course. Instructors, divemasters and dive shop staff are not physicians and should not be asked for medical advice; only medical professionals can give medical clearance to dive.
If you (or your physician) have questions about medical fitness to dive, contact the experts at Divers Alert Network (DAN).
Your Medical Statement must be signed by a physician within the last 12 months or full HSE Medical.
The Scuba Gear You Need During Your Course
To take part in this course you will need to make sure you have, as minimum:
- Fins, mask and snorkel
- Buoyancy control device (BCD) with tank mount or separate backpack, and low-pressure inflator
- Primary regulator and alternate air source
- Breathing gas monitoring device (e.g. submersible pressure gauge)
- Depth monitoring device
- Quick release weight system and weights (if necessary for neutral buoyancy, or if required for skills practice)
- Adequate exposure protection appropriate for our local dive conditions.
- At least one audible emergency surface signaling device (whistle, air horn, etc.).
- Dive computer or RDP Note: If dives are planned using the RDP, the diver must have a timing device.
- In test scuba diving cylinder
During your course, we will offer equipment rental of all of the above core dive gear. You will be required to collect your core dive gear prior to the open water training dives from us.

After This Course
As a certified PADI Assistant Instructor, you’re eligible to enroll in the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) and become a PADI Instructor.
You can also work with our PADI Course Directors and become qualified to teach select PADI specialty courses. Divemasters may also qualify to teach:
